As a professional, Jason Williams will use the steps below to ensure your stump grinding project is a success:
J. K. Williams Stump Grinding will inspect the area to identify level ground for the equipment, as well as any safety hazards which may exist prior to beginning the stump grinding process. Safety gear will be worn to protect against flying debris or rocks. If visibility is an issue they may trim vegetation in the area.
Any previously identified rocks, debris and vegetation will be removed from around the stump using a shovel. These is for safety as well as protection of the wheel teeth of the grinder.
The equipment will be moved to the stump, raised a few inches above the stump and the wheel blade will be lowered onto the stump, moving the cutter back and forth to grind the entire section of stump. They will continue grinding to at least 4 inches below the surface of the ground.
The wood mulch will be raked into the hole, tamped down, and raked for an even surface. The mulch will eventually mix with the soil, leaving you with a level ground to plant grass or landscape plants.
While many of our clients consider stumps an eyesore or tripping hazard, these aren’t the only concerns to consider. Leaving a stump in tact may introduce pests including termites, fungi and other organisms to your yard during the decomposition process which can be costly and irritating to get rid of and possibly toxic to children and pets.
It is also possible for the roots to continue growing even after a tree has been cut which can cause damage to landscape and hardscapes or even foundations. Further the tree itself can sprout shoots which are difficult to get rid of and can leech nutrients from surrounding landscape.
Using a piece of equipment, an existing stump is ground into fresh mulch using carbide cutting tips. See more about the process here.
No. Stump Removal may use chemicals to cause the stump to quickly decompose, but usually stump removal involves heavy machinery to rip the stump and roots from the ground leaving a hole where the tree previously was. This is more expensive and can cause damage to existing hardscapes and established lawns and landscape.
Stump Grinding is a less invasive, less expensive and quicker option which leaves no hole to fill and is an environmentally friendly solution to unsightly stumps.
